Gracie Fundamentals is our entry-level program for adults. In this program, you will learn the 36 basic techniques of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu (also known as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu / BJJ) in a comfortable, safe, and cooperative environment. Each lesson includes at least one stance and one ground self-defense technique, which are further divided into simplified exercises or "slices" to facilitate the learning process.
You can start the program at any time and participate in any lesson without prior experience, and since safety is our primary concern, there is no sparring in this program in the beginning. Upon successful completion of the beginner program, you will receive your White-blue belt, which qualifies you to advance to the advanced (intermediate) program. We are confident that the curriculum, camaraderie, and quality of teaching will exceed all your expectations.
36 basic techniques
Although Gracie Jiu-Jitsu consists of over 600 techniques, studies of real-world fights conducted by members of the Gracie Family have shown that 36 techniques have been used more often and with greater success than all other techniques combined. You need absolutely no experience to begin this program. Our instructors conduct all classes in a cooperative training environment and are committed to ensuring that each new student, regardless of age, gender, or athletic ability, has an informative, enjoyable experience.
Step 1) Learn the techniques:
We have divided the first 36 of the most basic Gracie techniques into 23 ongoing lessons so that you can complete the course at your own pace. We have designed each lesson so that you can begin at any point in the course. This allows you to complete the 23 lessons in any order without feeling overwhelmed or confused. When you register, we will provide you with a personalized attendance card where we will track your progress at each step.
Step 2) Develop your reflexes:
Once you complete each of the 23 lessons twice, you will qualify to participate in the Reflex Development Classes (RD), where you will learn how to combine basic techniques to address the most common occurrences in a real fight.
Step 3) Earn your White-blue belt:
Once you have completed each of the lessons three times and completed about 12 reflex development classes, you are eligible to test your White-blue belt! We will conduct a 25-minute test to assess your ability, where you will demonstrate the 36 essential techniques individually and in combination. If your reflexes are sharp and your performance meets our standards, you qualify for promotion and you are ready to make the transition to our advanced (Blue belt) program.
