The Sons of Maeda

Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Unlocked.

Had there been no Mitsuyo Maedas, with the emphasis on the plural Maedas, Jiu-Jitsu would probably have been forgotten during the 20th century.

We owe the survival of the valuable and unique knowledge of this martial art to numerous masters who left their native Japan at a young age around the turn of the century before last for an uncertain future in the West. They all took an arduous journey, either to leave behind a rapidly changing Japan after the Meiji Restoration in 1868 and to create better prospects for their future lives, or because, like Maeda, they were expressly sent out into the wide world by their masters to spread the “gentle art”.

This is my story of the Jiu-Jitsu that came from Japan to Europe, and to Brazil, to later spread throughout the world. -Franco Vacirca Garcia

Prof. Franco Vacirca

Franco Vacirca founded the first “JKD Concepts-Muay Thai-Filipino Kali” academy in Zurich, Switzerland, in 1989. In 1991, he and his brother, Demetrio (Meillaud-Vacirca), brought Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to Europe. The first official Vacirca Brothers–Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy opened in Zurich in 1995, and the first European network, Gracie Concepts HQ, was established the following year. Vacirca, also known as “Professor de Jiu-Jitsu,” was the first European to earn a black belt in BJJ. He remains the highest-ranked European today, holding a prestigious Coral belt, 7th degree. He completed his training as a BJJ instructor under Grandmaster Pedro Hemetério. Furthermore, Franco has been studying under Ajarn (Grandmaster) Surachai Sirisute since 1986 and holds the title “Kun Khru” (Teacher) in Muay Thai. He also holds a teaching degree in Filipino Kali-Eskrima. Prof. Vacirca speaks six languages and has lived in Asia, California, and Europe. He works as a seminar leader several weekends throughout the year. His first book, GJJ Unlocked, was published in 2001, translated into five languages, and sold worldwide. The Vacirca brothers have released several DVDs on GJJ/BJJ, VB self-defense, and mobility training. A monthly article has appeared in seven languages worldwide in the magazine CINTURON NEGRO/BUDO MARTIAL ARTS/KAMPFKUNST INTERNATIONAL since 1997. Since 1995, Prof. Franco has worked as a consultant for the military, police, and special forces, including SWAT, GIGN, GEO, and SEK. He lives in Zurich, where he offers small group and private training sessions with his team of trainers.

GROUP Classes

Trimester fee (subscription) up to 5 evening lessons per week in an open group. If the trimester has already begun, the fee is calculated on a monthly basis and an additional contribution towards expenses (CHF 20) is required. Must sign-in at SportsNow App the day before to confirm participation.

KIDS Lessons

Trimester fee (subscription) for 1 lesson per week in an open group. If the semester has already begun, the fee is calculated on a monthly basis and an additional contribution towards expenses (CHF 20) is required. Must sign-in at SportsNow App the day before to confirm participation.
