Visitor FAQ
What exactly is BJJ?
It is a grappling system that focuses on forcing an opponent to submit using joint locks and chokeholds. It is based on the principle that a smaller person can defeat a larger opponent through leverage and technique. Authentic Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) was developed by Grandmaster Hélio Gracie in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to be in shape to get started?
Basic fitness is necessary, but the best way to build the specific endurance and strength you need is through BJJ training itself. Many people start out with little to no fitness, as long as they’re motivated to work on themselves.
Are there punches or kicks in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
In authentic BJJ (Gracie Jiu-Jitsu), there are only a few essential strikes or kicks. However, the focus is on grappling and ground control (Jap. Newaza).
What does “roles” mean?
An important part of training is randori (Japanese for "free practice"), which is not conventional sparring. In randori, you try to apply the techniques you have learned against a partner who is actively defending themselves.
What does “groping” mean?
This is a hand signal to indicate that you’re giving up. If you’re stuck in a hold or are in pain, tap your partner (or the mat) twice to end the match immediately.
Equipment & Training
What should I wear to the trial workout?
For your first few classes, comfortable workout pants (without zippers or pockets) and a short-sleeved T-shirt (no tank tops) are usually sufficient. Once you’ve signed up, you’ll also need a BJJ gi.
What is the difference between gi and no-gi?
Gi: Training in a traditional BJJ gi. You are allowed to grab your opponent's gi to control them.
Nogi: Training in tight-fitting functional clothing (rash guard and shorts). It’s more dynamic and faster because your opponent can’t grab your clothes.

How often should I work out?
For steady progress in BJJ, training twice a week is recommended.
Grading & Progress
What belt colors are there in Gracie / Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
The belt system for adults is: White → Blue → Purple → Brown → Black.
Children are divided into the following age groups: Gray, Yellow, Orange, and Green.
How long does it take to earn a black belt?
On average, it takes 8 to 12 years. BJJ is considered one of the martial arts in which you have to train the longest to earn a promotion.
Safety & Health
Is BJJ dangerous?
Like any contact sport, it carries risks, but thanks to controlled randori and timely “tapping,” the risk of injury is lower than in many team sports.
Important hygiene guidelines:
– Always keep your fingernails and toenails trimmed short to avoid scratches.
– Do not wear jewelry or watches on the tatami (mat).
– Never walk around barefoot outside the mat area; always wear flip-flops.
